Receiving a cancer diagnosis or other chronic health condition can be a devastating a life altering predicament. For many people, it’s a game changer, where one cannot continue with regular everyday activities such as work, school, ADL’s, childrearing, driving, or even to live at home. Some people spend a lot of time in the hospital, for both inpatient and outpatient protocols. An important aspect of dealing with a cancer diagnosis is helping the patient process the emotional healing and learn to manage emotions through this journey. Clinicians often struggle with supporting clients who are experiencing the “getting a bad diagnosis” experience. This workshop will offer strategies to work with cancer patients, as well as others dealing with chronic or prolonged illness.
We will explore the different stages of adjustment to trauma and grief (in response to a bad diagnosis) and provide insight into the aspects of emotional healing after receiving a bad diagnosis. This training will offer resources and skills that may greatly impact the lives of our clients and empower them to understand, process and work through the many important aspects of managing emotions.
Main topics covered include the stages of grief, resilience, attachment theory and the role of oncology social workers. We will look at palliative care, neurobiology, emotional regulation and expressive arts interventions. Cancer patients often say the hardest part of treatment is the emotional healing. Research shows the role of resilience in healing. The American Cancer Society and other organizations offer both financial and emotional support to patients. All patients are told of their 5-year survival rate and costs of their treatment. There are multiple support groups for cancer patients and their families. This training will empower clinicians to be more knowledgeable and able to be supportive of clients during their most trying times.
