For children, play is a way to organize their world and their experiences. Play represents their language as well as their reality; through play children make sense of their world. Dreams give insight into the internal worlds of the individual. For children who struggle with sleep and dreams/nightmares, play serves as the therapeutic vehicle, allowing them to communicate their innermost struggles to their trusted clinician and to receive therapeutic guidance.
Play therapy has many advantages including the fact that play is often a familiar safety net where the child feels in control and thus can give themselves permission to describe their experiences more effectively. This built in rapport affords the clinician a glimpse into the child’s life as well as an opportunity to gain insight into the challenges related to the sleep problems.
This training will focus on exploring children’s dreams and nightmares through the lens of two major theories: Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy and Jungian Play Therapy. Participants will learn the steps and rationale for six creative play therapy interventions to use with clients. These activities will focus on exploring the child’s dreams and reducing nightmares and sleep disturbance. You don’t want to miss this fascinating, creative and engaging training!

Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify and describe two major play therapy theoretical approaches in assessing and treating childhood sleep disturbance (Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy and Jungian Play Therapy).
- Recall six specific play therapy techniques to assist the child client in managing his/her maladaptive sleep symptoms.
- Describe strategies for utilizing digital play to improve a child’s sleep hygiene and dreams. Identify three dream-focused phone apps to assist the individual in preparing for a restful night’s sleep.
