Course Description:
This course provides 3 CE non-contact APT Hours. See below for full details.
Therapy is most effective when treatment is based on a comprehensive assessment which guides the interventions. Nowhere has this been more challenging than working with children or teens who often present as both hesitant, unable, or resistant to share what they are thinking or feeling. This is compounded by the recent pandemic which has forced mental health professionals to find new skills for online engagement and services.
This training will outline a step-by-step model that will empower you to effectively assess children and teens with a wide variety of presenting issues. Participants will learn an innovative play-based assessment model they can implement immediately into their practice and thereby create more effective outcomes.
A number of key issues will be highlighted, including key guidelines for assessment; factors that affect assessment; structure of assessment; gathering information from caregivers and collaterals; rapport-building; treatment planning; providing feedback on assessment results to caregivers.
Creative structured play therapy activities will be presented. Case examples will demonstrate the assessment techniques and how they can be used by clinicians. The key steps for developing a treatment plan will be outlined, and a sample treatment plan will be presented. Participants will receive a packet of assessment activities that they can use immediately in their clinical practice.
