Selective Mutism (SM) is a highly impairing child anxiety disorder preventing affected children from meaningfully participating in life to the fullest. Their voices are not heard and they can't advocate for themselves in school, with peer and in many other settings.
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy Adapted for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM) is a research-tested behavioral play therapy that improves verbal and non-verbal participation and reduces parental over-accommodation. Research in randomized trials shows that the outcomes are impressive and the gains persist and generalize to real world settings. This training will focus on treatment for ages 3 to 9.
Dr. Kurtz is the developer of the PCIT-SM protocol and is certified by PCIT International as a PCIT Global Trainer. This 3-hour training is filled with video exemplars of the techniques in action with free pointers and resources for many supplementary materials as well.
Play forms the basis and foundation on which the parent-child interactions and therapist-child interactions allow the child to move beyond their comfort zone to begin talking more outside of the home. Vygotsky's Zones of Proximal Development provides a conceptual basis on which we use play therapy as the vehicle to increase grit and successful behavioral exposures.
The treatment has many interesting and unique characteristics including the fact that the parent and child are coached live – in real time – to shape new interaction patterns. The motto of Kurtz Psychology Consulting PC is changing interactions one at a time and no treatment captures this process better than PCIT and PCIT-SM. This robust treatment can be done either via telehealth or in person.
