As child and play therapists encounter children referred for sexual behavior problems, it is important to keep in mind that young children (under age 12) are not considered “sex offenders.” Their sexual development is at a level where sexual impulses and sexual fantasies as seen in adolescents and adults are very different, and sexual intent for sexual gratification is often questionable. Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy interventions help children increase awareness of thoughts and feelings and teaches skills to manage problematic sexual behavior. Juliet Fortino:
Many children with histories of sexual abuse struggle with problematic sexual behaviors. This training will review common symptoms and behaviors seen in child and play therapy sessions, as well as uniquely distinguishing characteristics of juvenile perpetrators versus sexually acting out children. Play therapy techniques specific to this population will be explored.
Original recording date: November 3, 2021
