Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery and involves the exploitation of women, men and children. This topic formerly spoken of in hushed tones has gained prominence in recent years. Worldwide, it is estimated to impact about 600,000 to 800,000 people annually. Some estimates place the number in the millions, however, it remains very difficult to detect and calculate. Maryland rounds out the top 20 states with the highest volume of calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. In 2020, Maryland logged 529 contacts through various means including calls, texts, and chats. Because Maryland is a state with a prime environment for trafficking, understanding the factors contributing to victimization and adding tools to your toolbox is imperative for mental health professionals.
The next victim may be sitting in your office. Could you unintentionally be perpetuating this societal problem? What could you do to intervene? This workshop will allow you an opportunity for self-reflection and vital education. Do you have a client with a history of trauma, a mental health diagnosis, who uses drugs, lives by defining their worth by “likes” on social media or who lives in a dysfunctional family? These risk factors should be kept in mind.
This training will help you to recognize the language and prevalence of trafficking so that you can pick up on subtle clues your client may be giving. It will also help therapists understand areas of vulnerability so that cognitive behavioral, and other therapeutic strategies and resources can be utilized. It will also help you make connections with current and former clients to inform treatment practices. This training will identify societal factors that have contributed and will continue to contribute to the growth of human trafficking in this country.
Finally, this workshop will empower and guide you by providing a framework for identifying red flags of victimization, targeting treatment to bolster resilience in those areas, increasing strength-based supports, and effectively helping clients to experience freedom.
