Via live interactive webinar
Due to COVID-19 health concerns, this one-time online event has been approved by the Association for Play Therapy (APT) for 3 CONTACT CE Hours. See below for full details. Course is limited to 40 attendees only. Once capacity is met, course will be unavailable for purchase.
Many people mistakenly think that adoption is only a happy experience. It’s easy to forget or be unaware that all adoption stories start from a place of grief and loss. Picturing how this grief might manifest itself in a child or infant can be hard for adoptive parents to envision or prepare for as they are often focused on their own elation for reaching this point. During the webinar, we will discuss the experience of navigating the trauma, grief, and loss that comes with all types of adoption, even for infants, and discuss practical play therapy and creative interventions that can greatly assist the child or teen.
We will share examples of how this trauma can manifest in young children and teens. We will also discuss ways that families can better prepare to support their children through the sometimes very difficult emotional journey of processing their adoption.
This course will empower child and teen therapists to be familiar with seven core issues that often manifest in adoption and effective ways to navigate them. Interventions that help the child and teen as individuals and also the collective family, will be discussed. This is a must-attend for anyone who works with adopted children and teens.
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- List 7 core issues in open or closed adoption and play therapy interventions that can address them.
- Explore why the adoption process is not emotionally easy or free of trauma and 3 methods to address this via play therapy.
- Identify how trauma can manifest throughout the lifespan, and how incorporating play therapy techniques can be effective to treat these issues.
- Recite at least three ways that families can be better prepared to support their children through the emotional challenges of adoption.
