Course Description:
One of the most challenging situations couples counselors face is the broken trust caused by infidelity. In few other scenarios do emotions run as high and values get tested as strongly as an affair on the part of one of the partners in front of you. Cultural and social moral standards are also put on the line as clients struggle with the reality of what has happened. They then turn to you to help them make sense of it all.
This course will help prepare you to walk through this gauntlet with distressed couples grappling with infidelity in their relationship. We will lay out the stages ahead of you and help you avoid the pitfalls that can stymie the repair of this relationship. You will learn what is needed for and from each partner as they move forward (and sometimes backward) through the healing process, and how to help them fulfill those needs for each other.
The world moves on relationships. In the most committed and intimate relationship a person has, betrayal can cut straight to the heart. As couples counselors, we have an awesome responsibility to guide couples in crisis through this make-or-break problem. Participants will leave feeling a greater sense of knowledge of how to do right by their clients and confidence that they can help in this most needed time.
Learning Objectives:
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Examine their own values and biases regarding infidelity and apply openness and acceptance when approaching clients.
- Summarize the 5 stages of helping a couple work through an affair.
- Relate 4 needs and 4 challenges of both partners in a couple experiencing infidelity.
