Course Overview

Our digitally connected world allows for instant news and updates like never before. With this great access comes exposure to breaking stories that children were often shielded from in childhood. With many countries declaring a state of emergency due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), much panic has ensued. People are stockpiling supplies, grocery stores are being sold out, offices and businesses are closing their doors and a general state of frenzy has ensued. As therapists, we want to help ground and calm our clients so that they can live happy and healthy lives, while also protecting themselves and their loved ones.

This training will explore the developmental needs of toddlers through adults, addressing what and how to talk to them about global and local emergencies and dangers. It will define the importance of being well-informed while also not exaggerating or providing untruthful information. It will share a clear 5 step guide to sharing information and teach 3 techniques to ground and help relax our clients of all ages.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn about developmentally appropriate methods for sharing crisis information.
  • Participants will learn a five-step evidence-based model for giving over potentially alarming news and talking with children and adults.
  • Participants will learn how to self-regulate and teach clients three effective grounding techniques.
