What makes people act the way they do? This question has been studied by philosophers, scientists and for the past century has been a primary focus of psychology. Sigmund Freud posited that many underlying forces contribute to the actions carried out by people. His daughter Anna Freud developed this thesis and made famous many of the classic Freudian defense mechanisms. Psychiatrist Eric Berne’s 1964 book Games People Play opened up a new era of clinical understanding of how humans are wired for self-protection, subconscious motivations and how to play into or fight these games. As therapists, we often find ourselves face to face with these defenses and games while trying to help our clients.
This training will focus on understanding evolutionary psychology, Freudian defenses, games people play and most importantly, how to help bring clinical awareness to clients. By learning how we are wired, what makes us tick and how to become aware of and deal with unconscious motivations, desires and agendas, we can become more insightful people. Learn how to utilize insights from transactional analysis, ego states, Freudian defenses, mind-mapping, mind masking and evolutionary psychology to enhance personal, emotional and vocational relationships.
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- List the foundations of evolutionary psychology and at least 10 defense mechanisms.
- Describe 4 foundations of ego state theory and transactional analysis.
- Utilize 5 evidence-based techniques to help clients reach actionable insights about their own brain style and games they play.
