Eating disorders have a 4.4% lifetime occurrence rate with only about 40% of people ever receiving treatment (NIMH, 2019). Eating disorders are potentially fatal mental health and medical issues that must be addressed and comprehensively treated. They are often one of the least known and studied groups among mental health practitioners. People with eating disorders do not always present as wanting help. In fact, they may vehemently reject it. After all, you can't make someone eat if they don't want to. But there are many effective interventions that can provide help. This training covers the identification and treatment of eating disorders using effective assessment and evidence-based models of interventions.
The course begins by reviewing essential eating disorder topics such including: a) common myths about eating disorders, b) proper diagnosis, c) referral to appropriate level of care, and d) gold-standard evidence-based treatments of eating disorders (e.g .Family-Based Treatment [FBT], Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Enhanced [CBT-E], and Integrative Modalities Therapy [IMT].
The focus of the course is largely on implementing evidence-based interventions for eating disorders in practice. The interventions discussed include 1) establishing regular eating with the use of food logs, 2) introducing appetitive eating and mindfulness of hunger / satiety cues, 3) fostering body acceptance, 4) using exposure techniques to increase tolerance of eating disorder related fears, 5) separating the self from the body, and 6) incorporating family members into treatment, when appropriate.
