Because therapists almost never receive adequate training in the identification and treatment of eating disorders, these cases are often overlooked in practice. Considering that eating disorders are the second deadliest mental illness after only substance abuse, it is imperative that as a field we begin meeting the treatment needs of these patients.
This course teaches mental health professionals how to effectively and compassionately identify and treat eating disorders as well as body image concerns using evidence-based methods. Over four courses, this series will cover four (self-contained and cumulative) core concepts of evidence-based treatment of eating disorders including:
: Eating disorder basics (e.g., stereotypes, medical complications, levels of care, diagnosis, referrals and case conceptualization)
: Family therapy for moderate to severe eating disorder cases (e.g., how to involve parents and caretakers in treatment as well as communication with other members of the patient’s team)
: Individual therapy for less severe disordered eating (e.g., establishing normal eating patterns, introducing feared foods, and learning to eat in accordance with appetite).
: Addressing body image concerns with evidence-based interventions in individual therapy (e.g., exposure and compassion focused therapy exercises for body image).
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- List 3 techniques for helping patients establish regular eating patterns
- Integrate client skills for fear foods and understanding when and how to stop eating
