Kimberley O’Brien:
Encopresis, more commonly called “soiling” is a debilitating condition to deal with as a parent, as it usually occurs at a stage when children are past the age of toilet training. While encopresis is a complex problem amongst many families, it is treatable. The majority of children with encopresis can be effectively treated with a combination of medical, psychological, and dietary interventions. This training will outline the diagnostic features, causes, and treatment of encopresis. Behavioral approaches will be highlighted, including how play therapy activities can be incorporated so that children will be more motivated to comply with the treatment protocol.

Susan Stutzman:
There are many children who struggle with the shame, embarrassment, and inconvenience of diurnal or nocturnal Enuresis (or both) who present for child or play therapy. Susan will provide practical knowledge and play based interventions from a Gestalt Therapy perspective heavily informed by neuroscience. Psychoeducation interventions to use with parents will also be highlighted.
Learning Objectives:
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Kimberley O’Brien:
  • Identify the behavioral causes and maintenance of Encopresis.
  • Explain the treatment approach of Encopresis.
  • Describe four play therapy activities that can be integrated into behavioral treatment.
Susan Stutzman:
  • List four different presentations of Enuresis that a child or play therapist may encounter.
  • Apply three play therapy interventions to treat Enuresis.
  • Implement three psychoeducation interventions to use with parents
