Overview
Via live interactive webinar
Course Description:
Due to COVID-19 health concerns, this one-time online event has been approved by the Association for Play Therapy (APT) for 3 CONTACT CE Hours. See below for full details. Course is limited to 40 attendees only. Once capacity is met, course will be unavailable for purchase.
Trauma can have a huge impact on the developing brain. As play therapists, we might see these effects play out as emotional and behavioral in the classroom or at home. Just as traumatic stress can impair a child’s sensory experience, play therapy can utilize sensory interventions to target and reduce that stress as well as the impact the traumatic stress has on the child or adolescent’s overall functioning.
This training teaches therapists the rationale and theory behind utilizing a sensory approach to working with children and adolescent clients, especially those who have experienced developmental trauma.
Incorporating sensory techniques can come with some discomfort and uncertainty. Therapists will learn about the ethical considerations and potential benefits of such an approach and will discuss strategies for utilizing sensory activities safely and therapeutically. Examples will be discussed and case studies reviewed.
Learning Objectives:
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recall at least 3 common sensory challenges, associated with trauma/stress, in child and adolescent clients that may present in your office.
- Discuss the ethical considerations, as well as potential benefits, in incorporating touch into the play therapy session.
- Apply at least 6 play therapy interventions utilizing the client’s five senses and describe the purpose, rationale, and steps of these interventions.
