Overview
Via live interactive webinar
Course Description:
Note: This online event provides 3 CE Association for Play Therapy (APT) credits and meets APT's definition of "Live Webinar." See below for full details and APT site for their new policies as of July 1, 2022. Course is limited to 50 attendees only. Once capacity is met, course will be unavailable for purchase.
Many children are referred to play therapy to assist in their adjustment to divorce. They may feel vulnerable, overwhelmed and confused by their emotions as well as the family dynamics. They may also feel anxious in therapy and reluctant to talk about the divorce. Providing a safe space and play-based activities may assist the child’s process and help them safely express their thoughts and feelings.
This webinar will highlight the most current theory and research on children of divorce, and present assessment and treatment techniques to guide children through the complications of divorce.
The interventions presented in this training will address important treatment domains. They are: Helping the child develop effective coping skills, facilitating the developmentally appropriate expression of feelings, clarifying divorce-related misconceptions, easing the stress associated with transitioning between two homes, Securing the child’s disengagement from parental conflict and eliminating the child’s potential for self-blame for the divorce. The interventions presented can be used in individual play therapy sessions, as well as children’s support groups.
Learning Objectives:
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the continuum of parent-child relationships after separation and divorce.
- Verbally articulate at least three risk factors that make it more difficult for a child to adjust to parental divorce.
- Apply at least two play therapy techniques to assess children of divorce.
- Implement at least three new interventions in play therapy sessions with children of divorce.
