Though the term was coined in the 1990s, Positive Psychology is not new. The approach blends together person-centered concepts, mindfulness, self-compassion and a focus on strengths. Positive psychology doesn’t ignore the problem areas. Instead, it allows us to work with clients in a way that offers empowerment and optimism for change.
Many clients report that it feels overwhelming to think of their weaknesses and problems. Positive psychology helps the individual view themselves within a positive lens and look for internal balance. This approach has helped millions and has produced evidence-based techniques with well-documented clinically significant outcomes.
Some clinicians still feel "iffy" about incorporating positive psychology into our work. This presentation will examine the benefits and opportunities associated with Positive Psychology as well as reinforce participants understanding of how this model is not different, but complementary, to our tried and true therapies which ground us.
The presenter will demonstrate how to remain true to our favorite modalities while using the PERMA model. We'll review the research behind this evidence-based practice. Participants will receive a plethora of techniques and interventions which might inspire others’ creativity in building their own clinical applications.
Lastly, we will look at how to use Positive Psychology in our own lives to improve our wellbeing, personal sense of meaning, and enhance clinician wellness. =
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify three components of Positive Psychology.
- List three major Positive Psychology researchers and their particular focus and interventions.
- Discuss each element of the PERMA model and identify two interventions for each element to use in clinical work.
