School refusal is not a disorder or diagnosis; rather a behavior, a symptom that indicates there is something substantial going on for the child internally and perhaps in their environment. As often is the case for play therapists, we are helping children and families resolve the underlying issues of a behavior as well as address the symptomatic behavior itself.
This training will provide strategies for therapists to use in the playroom for assessment and treatment appropriate for children exhibiting school refusing behavior and their parents/caregivers. The focus is on elementary, middle and high school age students.
Learning Objectives:
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- List 3 possible underlying causes of school refusing behavior.
- Identify 4 strategies therapists providing play therapy can utilize with parents of child clients who are having school refusing behavior.
- Name 3 play therapy theoretical orientations that can be effective in addressing school refusal.
- List 8 play-based interventions to support a child in play therapy who is showing school refusing behavior.
- Describe the importance of a family systems perspective when providing play therapy with a child who has school refusing behavior.
- Write a goal directed treatment plan for a play therapy client who is having school refusing behavior.
