Course Description:

When working with trauma clients, it’s easy to get pulled into the whirlwind of emotion, dysregulation and hopelessness. Establishing clear and mutual treatment goals is essential for both the client and the therapist. However, it is hard to know how to prioritize and how to collaborate with the client.

This course will teach you how to cut through the distracting and challenging aspects of trauma and complex cases to win the clients trust and confidence while creating a treatment plan that is effective and measurable. The target goal of success is confusing and elusive, until skills are utilized to focus in on need.

First, we will define issues and attempt to untangle and prioritize. We will establish a life timeline that unifies past and present as well as possible. Then we will categorize what is going on currently in the client’s life. Next, we will focus on three specific goals of current functioning. Next, we will utilize the 5 psychosexual stages of Freud as well as Erickson’s 8 stages of psychosocial development and help the client regain his or her life and vitality. Finally, we will work in a clear method of assessment regarding progress and reevaluation of goals.

Learning Objectives: Participants will learn to evaluation needs, prioritize treatment goals, develop a clear, structured and evidence-based treatment plan for trauma.

  • Participants will learn the principles and challenges of trauma treatment
  • Participants will learn 5 skills to prioritize and set treatment goals
  • Participants will learn how to utilize the developmental models of Freud and Erikson in the context of trauma treatment.
