An MFT counselor undergoes rigorous training and is required to have extensive knowledge of the way families function, as well as a considerable amount of experience. Like most other licenses issued to mental health professionals, MFT licenses also expire every 3 years; renewing them requires therapists to complete MFT CEUs, either online or in-person, through a range of activities and courses approved by the governing education and mental health institutes of the state. Activities such as participating in seminars, workshops, presenting papers at conferences or publishing them in journals, teaching a course on MFT, authoring a book or doing an accredited course from an approved provider all count towards the fulfillment of MFT CEUs and the hours they demand. However, the number of required hours and the regulations governing MFT CEUs vary from state to state, as does the period allotted for the completion of the CEUs.CE State Info
