As therapists, we’re often faced with clients whose presenting issues are only the tip of the iceberg as to what’s going on beneath the surface. Years of repression, denial, confusion and pain gush forth and wreak havoc on a life that is not progressing. Being aware of traumatic experiences that clients bring to the therapy room and how to sensitively talk about them is the foundation of effective therapy.
It is estimated that one in four to five Americans have been sexually molested as a child, one in four children have been beaten by a parent to the point of a mark being left on their body, one in three couples engage in physical violence, one in four children grew up with an alcoholic relative and one in eight children have witnesses their mother being beaten (NAMI, 2012). It is because of these statistics as well as other studies that researchers place the prevalence of childhood trauma exposure at between 46 to 95% (Levine, 2010).
This course will open your eyes to how to look for, address and respectfully engage with clients in the area of trauma and its treatment. It will offer new hope for communicating about the unspeakable pains clients have experienced and it will teach therapists how to give hope, compassion and most importantly guidance as clients embark on one of their most important and scary journeys of a lifetime, trauma treatment and grounding.
Original recording date: June 17, 2020 Length: 64 minutes
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify 10 signs of trauma
- Describe 4 effective methods for engaging clients to discuss and agree to treat their trauma.
- Implement 2 evidence-based interventions for beginning the trauma treatment process.
