She has held clinical positions as an outpatient and in-home therapist and clinical supervisor. Diane was an Adjunct Professor of Social Work for 10 years at The University of Kansas, School of Social Welfare and a Field Liaison and Field Instructor. She has also held administrative positions as a program Director and Coordinator. Diane is a frequent local and national trainer on a wide variety of mental health and workplace development topics with clinicians and companies. Diane is most passionate about providing quality and engaging professional development to clinicians, employees, and leaders. For fun, Diane loves to spoil her four Dachshunds and rock out to 80’s music.

Individuals who struggle with substance use can benefit from the many skills available in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). This training will provide an overview of the dynamics of substance use, including diagnosis and assessment. Learners will be introduced to the core tenets of DBT, including mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. Learners will be shown how to apply DBT skills such as validation, acceptance, and wise mind in supporting clients to overcome patterns of addiction and achieve sobriety.

Learning Objectives:
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Describe at least three dynamics of substance use and identify appropriate assessment tools.
  • Explain the core DBT philosophy and describe the four core skills.
  • Identify at least ten DBT skills that are appropriate for integration into substance use recovery treatment.
