Dealing with couples is often fraught with confusion, difficulty and trepidation. Most graduate programs do not adequately equip therapists to effectively work with couples. It is only through specialized training, supervision and the honing of skills that one can develop into a successful couples counselor.
This training is geared for clinicians who have completed the first level of our training on Couples Counseling or for therapists with some experience in working with couples. It will cover a brief review of general challenges of working with couples, marriage and divorce foundational perspectives as well as some of the most popular couples’ modalities. We will then develop themes of how to motivate clients to make lasting change, how to discuss and treat sexual issues and how to create evidence-based treatment plans.
The training will focus on the works of psychologist and sex therapist Dr. David Schnarch, PhD, inventor of Crucible Therapy, as well as psychiatrist and sex therapist Dr. Stephen Snyder, MD, author of Love Worth Making.
The training will cover effective ways to engage with couples and how to help each see their part of the problem as well as the solution. We will conclude with a demonstration in how to troubleshoot the top ten gridlock or difficult situations that occur when working with couples. Therapists will gain actionable and empowering evidence-based skills to bring to the couple’s sessions and to effect lasting changes.
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe and implement least three evidence-based couples counseling interventions.
- Discuss foundations of sex therapy, theory, practice and the boundaries of competency.
- Navigate 10 gridlock or difficult situations that occur in the course of couples counseling.
- Collaborate with clients in creating effective treatment plans that lead to lasting success and fulfillment as individuals and as a couple.
